Sine prece, sine pretio, sine poculo?: вибори як подія в сюжеті «Роману великої дороги» Г. Квітки-Основ’яненка та Ч. Діккенса

Abstract

У статті досліджуються вибори як подія в сюжетах романів «Жизнь и похождения Петра Степанова сына Столбикова, помещика в трех наместничествах. Рукопись XVIII века» українського письменника Г. Квітки-Основ’яненка та «The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club» англійського романіста Ч. Діккенса. Простежено, як вибори уподібнено азартній грі, справжньому змаганню між учасниками виборчого процесу, який набуває рис «вибуху» в житті провінційних міст.The article deals with the election as an event in the novel “The Life and Adventures... of Stolbikov...” by H. Kvitka-Osnovianenko and “The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club by Ch. Dickens. It traces how in the texts the election likened gambling, a real competition between the participants of the election process, which takes features of “explosion” in the life of the provincial towns. Election as an event of exceptional importance in the investigated novels is deployed in the chronotopes of a provincial fictional town of Eatanswill and of an unnamed Ukrainian peripheral town. Election results and race form a solid simulacrum, which masks the lack of representativeness of power in the British Parliament and the Russian county administration. The article examines how writers argue that the imitation of choice act turns pathetic election to farce.
